Intel has partnered with mobile wireless company Ericsson to offer HSPA high speed mobile data technologies. The chip maker will use its Moorestown series to power the new platform for the mobile Internet devices.
Intel Corp and Ericsson announced plans to team up in an effort to bring High Speed Packet Access to increasingly popular Mobile Internet Devices.
The Ericsson HSPA data solution is targeted with the launch of Intel's new Moorestown platform. The mobile platform is scheduled for release in late 2009.
Ericsson is extending its 3G mobile broadband technology from laptops down to mobile Internet devices. Some of these products include small laptops and smart phones.
Intel plans to make its Moorestown platform compatible with Ericsson's HSPA technology. Intel's new chip is the successor to the Atom chip. The new mobile chip is aimed directly at the Mobile Internet Device market which will include built-in graphics and video capabilities.
Intel says that Moorestown does a much better job addressing Atom's problem with power usage. The new chip will consume about 10 times less power at idle.
